As long as you stick to the rules of the server and be friendly to the other members of the community you will be free to go off and enjoy the server, trade with players and explore and build big communities and Cities with them. Some things like Whitelisted Factions are paid for but if you want to make a team without the benefits of getting extra items and a custom Faction Rank you can do so.
