Just people hanging out, building little things, helping each other, existing in the same quiet digital space. You log in and nothing terrible is waiting for you. It’s simple. It’s wholesome. Anyway. That reminds me of the time I accidentally became assistant manager of a pet store. I went in for fish food. That’s it. That was the mission. But the second I stepped inside, the only employee — a guy who looked like he had been awake since the invention of gravel — handed me a clipboard and said, “Can you just watch the front for a second?” before disappearing into the back room like a side character exiting a low-budget sitcom. Suddenly I was behind the counter. A woman walked up and asked if hamsters get lonely. I panicked and said, “Emotionally? Yes. Spiritually? It depends.” She nodded like that was wisdom and bought three. Then the parrot started screaming, “NO TAXES! BUILD THE TUNNEL!” and I don’t know what tunnel she meant, but she believed in it deeply. A kid stared into the turtle tank and whispered, “He remembers.” I don’t know what the turtle remembers. I don’t know what the kid did. I didn’t ask. A delivery truck arrived with 200 pounds of decorative gravel. The driver said, “Where do you want it?” and I pointed confidently to a random corner. Leadership is mostly pointing with confidence. Somehow I began reorganizing shelves. I labeled things. I told a man that goldfish prefer soft jazz. I convinced someone that their iguana just needed “personal growth time.” I broke up a dramatic staring contest between two guinea pigs. I named them Craig and Parliament. Hours passed. The parrot began chanting, “VOTE GERALDINE,” which was concerning because Geraldine was the parrot. Customers started asking about her policies. I may have said she supported affordable nesting materials and infrastructure reform. Then the real manager walked in. She looked at the organized gravel pile. She looked at the calm customers. She looked at the parrot yelling about urban development. Then she looked at me. “Who are you?” “I came for fish food,” I whispered, still holding the clipboard like it legally belonged to me. She nodded slowly. “Can you work Saturdays?” And honestly, sometimes that’s just how things happen. You walk into something peaceful and simple, and suddenly you’re part of this weird, wholesome, slightly unhinged community where nobody really knows what’s going on but everyone is just kind of… vibing.
